It's been a really weird day for Takashi.

Not because of the too-big clothes -- he's used to getting hand-me-downs from foster brothers (or sisters) and having to roll the sleeves and legs up a few times to make them fit. The fact that these clothes seem to be made for someone twice his size doesn't cause more than a minute or so of confusion before he's sighing and dealing with it.

And not because of the unfamiliar surroundings -- Takashi's lived so many places that it's not uncommon for him not to recognize the latest apartment or house's surroundings right after waking up. Even though...after he rubs at his eyes with the heels of his hands and frowns around a little, the place still doesn't look familiar. Maybe he's getting sick.

No, the weirdest thing is that there's a dog here. Takashi's been in a lot of different homes in his almost-seven years, and he's almost completely certain none of them have had a dog in it. It's a very cute dog, small and shaggy, with big brown eyes and a fluffy tail. But it's also barking at him, and trying to bite his ankles, so Takashi quickly scrambles off the couch, tugging the too-big shirt around himself and running for the nearest door.

Hopefully he'll run into someone familiar out in the hallway...

Lucky for him, Padmé is in the hallway. She's just about to enter her apartment when she hears a familiar bark and heads up the stairs instead. She's trying to address the dog before she even looks. "Kyan-san? What's the matter, boy? Where's Takashi?"

She stops when she reaches the landing and picks up the upset, barking dog. "Why's your door open? I'm sure that Takashi doesn't just leave it open so that anyone can come in."

The movement in the corner of her eye catches her attention and she puts the dog down. The boy is...small and swimming in clothes that are obviously meant for a person much larger than he is. However, he is trying to shy away from her in a very familiar way.

Shorter, yes, but still her adopted child.

And if the insights she's gained into his past, trying to call him in anything but a gentle tone will be problematic.

"Natsume Takashi," she whipsers softly. "I know that's you. Somehow. Please don't try to run. I'm Padmé, your downstairs neighbor."

When he stops, she takes a good look at him. "How did this happen?" she mutters to herself as she continues to look him over.

"No, sweetheart, you're not in trouble. How about we close the door to this apartment and then we can take Kyan-san downstairs? I can make you some hot chocolate."

And she could talk to Anakin about what the hell was going on around here. Out of all the strange things that happened in Verens, something like this was...out of her scope of reality.

He is small, but in a way, he reminds her of Anakin as a child. His small, sweet face is much like her husband's once was, but he's far more reserved than Anakin ever was. The smile, however, is pure rapture. It's good to see that he still likes hot chocolate, no matter his age.

When he stops she turns around to look at him, an unspoken question on her face until he asks that. "Yes, sweetheart. I promise you won't get in trouble."

She closes the door tightly, making a mental note to look for his key and to lock it up until this, whatever this is, was over and he was back to his normal self. Once that's done, she grabs the once-more yapping dog and tucks him under her arm. "Are you hungry as well? I think I have some fresh baked bread. Or would cookies be better?"

For a second, she considers taking his hand. What stops her is the memory of his behavior every time she has touched him unexpectedly. How far back did that extend? Would she ever get the names of anyone besides his last guardians to know whom she could dislike? And if they ever showed up, just what would she say to those who had rejected such a sweet child for something he'd never asked for?

She smiles at him and shakes her head. "Yes, you may have some cookies with your hot chocolate. This is a day for treats, I suppose. As for where you live..." She sighs as they reach the bottom landing and she turns to the door of her own apartment. "You live upstairs normally, while I live here with my husband. You come over a lot for dinner because we enjoy your company and you seem to enjoy my cooking."

She puts down Kyan-san as soon as she opens the door and watches the small dog as he runs inside and starts to sniff everything. "But you are more than welcome to stay with us until we figure out what's going on, Takashi."

She realizes how what she said sounded as soon as he speaks. Without blinking, she bends down and touches his arm briefly.

"Takashi, listen to me. I have said this to you before, but you probably don't remember it. You are very much wanted. You have a lot of friends and I consider you as one of my children. I am not the only one, as I have come to find out." She smiles, trying not to sound jealous about others trying to claim him as theirs as well.

"Everyone loves you here. The only reason you lived upstairs is because you wanted to have your own space and there is only one bedroom in this apartment. Otherwise, my husband and I would have had you move in with us, you and Kyan-san. Never think that you are unwanted here."

She can see the affect her words have on him and it's like a knife to the chest. She definitely dislikes the people who have had custody of her child before his arrival here. More now than before.

The hand in her hair causes tears to gather in her eyes and when he hugs her, she returns the gesture as tightly as she can while ignoring the moisture on her cheeks.

"I am sorry that others have been unkind to you, but there is no one here who would treat you like that here. And if someone is stupid enough to try, they will have a mob of people after them."

She looks at him, smiling and reaching up to stop his hands. "Of course you can stay here with me. You don't have to go anywhere you don't want to go. I am not the type of person to make you go away."

Padmé stands, taking one of his small hands and leading him over to the kitchen table so that she can make him some hot chocolate. She's grateful that they've managed to rig some sort of cooling system so that the apartment is cool, despite the sweltering summer heat outside.

"Of course, we'll need to figure out how you've somehow gone from sixteen to six, but that can wait until tomorrow. And is something we can do with Anakin and Master Kenobi."

A part of her is not at all surprised at the way that he's now clinging to her dress. In fact, she slows down her movements so that she doesn't jostle him loose as she makes them both something to drink and looks about for the cookies she made a few days ago.

"Master Kenobi," she corrects, slowly enunciating the words so that he can commit them to memory "is a dear friend to myself and my husband. He is much like Anakin's brother, so I suppose that makes him something like your uncle at this point. His first name is Obi-Wan. I'm sure that he won't mind if you call him that.

She smiles fondly at the way that he mimics her, so seriously until he gets to her name. It's enough to break her heart, if she had any more of it that he hadn't already crushed under the vast adorableness that is just him.

"Yes, they are. I was going to save them for dessert, but I suppose eating cookies before dinner can be allowed. Just this once." She puts a few macaroons and a chocolate chip on a tea plate for him before setting it down on the table.

"And if you'd be so kind as to sit at the table, I'll bring you your drink as soon as it's done."

He really is destroying everything with just being so fucking cute. It's not at all fair. Padmé was already ready to adore him as a teen, but seeing him as a small child is too much.

With the way that he freezes when she mentions sitting at the table to eat his snack, she looks down at him, worried. Is he so afraid that she will dump him if he misbehaves, even for a second that he's terrified to leave her side for a moment?

"I'm not at all worried that you'll stuff yourself." Her voice is gentle as she warms up milk, but she really would like to find those responsible and throttle them until she has no strength left in her arms. The violence of her temper is something she doesn't speak about or act on, but it's there, lurking. She just has always had more control than her husband.

And though the table is only on the other side of the room, it's enough to make her anxious. For him. But she wants to make sure that her control is set before she joins him at the table. "Dinner won't be for a while, so that's why we're having snacks now. Just don't tell Anakin you had the chocolate chip cookie, okay? Those are his favorite."

"No, he won't be mad, Takashi. He loves you as well, though he has a harder time using those words exactly."

In fact, she's pretty sure that she, his mother and Obi-Wan are some of the only souls to have Anakin openly say that he loves them.

"In fact, what do you say to making more after we have our cookies and hot chocolate? Or we could make cupcakes. Do you like those?"

"Yes, you are loved very much. I love you as much as my own children, as much as my grandson. You are a very special young man to everyone that you know. And the people who are supposed to be your family and take care of you back on your world are missing out on a great deal."

She shakes his hands and smiles.

She sees the flowers and knows that this is 100% Takashi. He always makes the flowers in the living room bloom so prettily when he's happy. More so than even she or Anakin can manage.

When he laughs, she pulls him into a tight hug and places a kiss on the top of his head. "I'm not worried about you misbehaving. You're a good boy."

Since Frog was still borrowing Natsume's couch for a bed at this point, the amphibian-person also had a presence in the apartment. He was about to leave for the day but returned briefly to pick up forgotten provisions.

...what he didn't expect to see when he returned was a small child in too-big clothes who looked... eerily familiar. He peers at the boy for a short while before coming to a conclusion.

"Ah, child. Mayhap thou art a relative of Natsume's?"

The reaction isn't totally surprising to Frog, considering... well, he looks like a giant frog-person. He would imagine many small children would find that alarming. Still, it doesn't stop him from feeling guilty that he's scaring the poor lad just by existing...

Frog comes a little closer, but not too close, and kneels down in front of the boy. He doesn't want to trap him or give him cause to believe he was, in fact, going to hurt him in any way.

"I mean thee no harm, lad. Though my form is that of a frog, I am no monster. Pray, tell me thy name."

Look, he's even smiling! He hopes that looks friendly and not creepy at all...

'One of those monsters?' So it was commonplace for him to see such things? It's then Frog recalls a rather older boy who could see 'ghosts' or at least something like it. Could this child also be afflicted with the same curse? Or... maybe...

"I take no pleasure in bullying children," he replies, knowingly, as he was subject to torment himself at his age, albeit it by other humans. And slowly, he offers a friendly hand. It's entirely up to him if he wants to take it or not. "I am a friend... and I am beginning to wonder if we may have met before. Dost thou not remember me?"

Frog retracts that hand and tries to be as still as he can... evidently the boy was still on edge, and who could blame him if he expected to be treated so cruelly? At his explanation though, Frog is becoming more and more confused himself. That shirt was definitely familiar... so was the boy... but if this was really who he thought it was then how did he suddenly become younger?

Whatever the reason, the poor kid needed reassurance and security right now. Maybe he wasn't the best person, frog-person, to give it to him, but he would try as much as he would let him.

"I know not how thou came to be this way, but I am certain I know thee... Natsume. Takashi Natsume. Is that thy name?"

Then it was true? How odd... it seemed this place held many more secrets that Frog was unaware of. In any case, Natsume seems to have calmed a little, some of that fear replaced with surprise instead. Frog still doesn't dare move any closer, but sits exactly where he is, keeping that distance between them.

"Ah, mine name is... Frog," he says, realising how strange that must sound - even moreso to a small child. "Mayhap I do not appear as a normal frog, but... there is naught to be afraid of."

Even if he was carrying a sword. He hoped Natsume wouldn't see that as a sign that Frog really could be potentially dangerous. Hrm, let's try and keep the focus off of that.

"Thou hast found thyself in a strange land known as Empatheias. This is the city of Verens... and this is thine new dwelling place. I am sure thou shalt find thyself in a much more comfortable state once we have found thee more... fitting clothes."

"Why? Well..."

There's an awkward pause at that as Frog tries to think of a suitable answer. He's not going to launch into details about what had happened to him - it would only pose more questions, or unnerve poor little Natsume even more. How to explain... No, there was nothing for it. He would just have to be honest.

"I did once have another name... Glenn. If it suits thee better, please... call me by it."

It wasn't a lie and at least it gave the child a choice. The way Natsume shrinks at the news of his new location, no matter how much he took in, leads Frog to grow ever more concerned, however.

"And no, thou art not alone. Though I am really merely a visitor, thou shalt find kind people living below. Should thou need help or company, thou art welcome here."

Really Natsume, did you really have to thank him for just being nice...? How sad. Frog doesn't respond to that prodding either, allowing the boy to sense things out. Yes, he is very much real, whether that was seen as a bad thing or not!

It was good to see the child beginning to relax, if only just a little, but Frog falters at his next question. Even when he was older, Frog knew nothing about Natsume's parents or any other members of his family. Trying to explain that to a lost little boy...

"I... I am afraid I know not who thine family is. Still, there is no reason why thou cannot belong to thyself! Thou art a strong lad."

He's trying to spin this in a positive light, but he's not sure if it's really helping...

It was rather strange to have a small child suddenly scoot closer and start patting away at your feet, but Frog was happy to see the boy coming out of his shell. That anyone should even wish to touch him in his current form was a pleasant surprise, particularly one so small and so afraid of that which appeared unnatural...

There was still the problem of Natsume's current position however. He couldn't very well leave him alone and he couldn't give him an answer as to the whereabouts of his parents either. He's not sure if his offer will be met with much relief, but he has to try.

"...I hath been using thy seat as a bed since mine own home collapsed in a quake. I cannot replace thy parents but... I am here for thee, Natsume. Thou art not alone."

Frog is aware that his way of speaking isn't familiar to most of the people he's met here, so it would be no surprise to him if a six-year-old would find it a little difficult to process... Still, Natsume seems to be doing well in that regard and can at least understand enough to work out what he was saying!

...which was to say... well, he hadn't quite meant he would literally take him under his wing, but that hopeful look in his eyes and the little hands clasping his own make it very difficult to say otherwise. He hesitates, not sure what to really say to that, but...

Although did he just say 'not feed him' if he was bad? Was that really something he expected from a responsible adult? The smile doesn't fade entirely, but Frog's still looking sympathetically at the kid. Just what kind of environment had Natsume grown up in... and how had he turned out so kind despite it?

"Thou art a healthy growing lad and shalt have a hearty meal each night with me! Alas, I expect thee to eat thy vegetables readily, though if green beans art not to thy taste... I am sure we can seeketh out an alternative.

Hmm... books art also a gift to one so young and provide much knowledge. However, thy mind can only hold so much each day. Be sure to rest when thou needeth it."

It's the way he talks about it with a sense of normality that really touches Frog's heart. No child should believe that such cruelties are a 'normal' part of growing up. There would always be hardships yes but... there was no excuse for neglect. Even Cyrus, who believed him to be too soft-hearted, would surely agree with him in this case.

O-oh um, well now they weren't just holding hands - Frog's moist amphibious hands were being gently patted at. He's not quite sure exactly what he should do in response to this, so opts to stretch out those sort-of-squishy fingers, palm up, and allow Natsume whatever curiosity he needs to get out of his system.

As for the beans... well, poor Frog tenses a little at the child's words. Coming from anyone else, he might feel that it was him being talked about.

Frog gives a croaking chuckle in response to Natsume's giggling... as well as his supposed unfamiliarity with the word 'parsnip'. Such a common vegetable and Natsume had never come across it before?

From: [personal profile] lukeim_yurlin
As promised, Dezel has been stopping by Natsume's apartment with decent regularity to teach the kid some of what he knows about cooking. It's been mostly simple things from the start, the seraph recording easy recipes to loose leaf paper and then putting them into a bound journal he gave to Natsume, scrapbook style. Today is another day for lessons, the wind seraph bringing some goodies along with some necessary ingredients for the recipe he wants his student to try.

As he comes up the stairs, however, he has the sense that something is amiss. For one, he can hear Kyan-san's barking. For another, the wind tells him Natsume's door is open. Concerned someone has tried to break into the apartment, the seraph windsteps right up the stairs, little more than a black and green blur until he reaches the top. Once there, he comes to a halt, hand still resting on the new hat he recently acquired and green eyes scanning the hallway from behind a few strands of silver and green-tipped hair. A light breeze moves down the hallway as Dezel evaluates the situation, noting the open door and...a little kid? What now?

From: [personal profile] lukeim_yurlin
Aaaand almost as soon as the kid notices Dezel, he's retreating back into the apartment.

Shit.

Dezel moves down the hallway, already asking the air currents to monitor the apartment interior and the child.  They're not on the first floor, after all, and if the kid is desperate enough to escape he might try going out a window.

It's as the seraph reaches the door that he begins to put two and two together, however.  The child can obviously see him (or at least sense him) and the wind is giving Dezel a familiar impression of the youth.  Moreover, the wind is also returning a familiar scent.  Not known to many is Dezel's keen sense of smell, the seraph not far off from a dog on two legs in that regard.  Then there's that hair and eye color.  So while Dezel does not know the how or why, he does know that the child reads as Natsume.

"Takashi...?"  The name is said with some gentle caution as Dezel opens the door further and enters the apartment.  "I don't know what's going on, but I can't help you if you run from me."

lukeim_yurlin: (What now...?)

Standing in the doorway, Dezel frowns at that frightened response.  From the look and sound of it, Natsume has somehow been turned back into a small child and all his memories of the seraph either lost or made inaccessible.  He can't leave the kid like this, though.  No, he feels a degree of responsibility here for his friend, even if he doesn't consider himself all that good with children.

Shutting the door with a soft click, Dezel removes his knapsack and places it on the floor.

"I won't hurt you, kid.  I promise."

Even as he speaks those words, however, the seraph knows Natsume has little reason to believe him.  So...how to handle this?  The closest situation Dezel can compare this to is that of a hurt or scared animal that's been cornered, and the worst thing to do in such a case is to press said animal for space.  In this instance, applying the same logic might be wise?

Sitting down near the door and against the wall, Dezel rests his arms on his bent knees.  "If I stay seated here by the door, will you talk with me?  You can stay where you are if you want."

As Natsume peers at Dezel from across the way, the air moves gently about him, brushing his face and hair.

"Maybe we can start with how old you are and if you know where you are right now."

As he speaks, Dezel is careful to maintain an even, gentle tone.  While this situation is worrisome, he knows he needs to look and sound as relaxed as possible.

The light breeze stills after a moment, Dezel satisfied with the amount of information he has picked up through it for now.  Near as he can tell, save for the shift in age and size, the kid is fine.  No injuries or other major issues to note.

"Hn, alright.  My name is Dezel and I'm a wind seraph.  I'm sorry if I scared you.  I heard the dog barking and thought there was trouble here."

While this is taking some real thought and effort on Dezel's part, it's the best he can think of to do in this situation.  If Takashi was a scared animal, Dezel would do the same - offer an apology for startling him, regardless of the fact that in that case there would be no verbal reply in words.

Dezel watches as Natsume makes his way over, keeping as still and relaxed as he's able.  This is exactly what the seraph hoped for, that the kid would come to him.  He figures it important that all this be done at Natsume's pace.

"A kind of elemental spirit that lives between  the spirit world and the mortal one.  My kind comes from a place called Glenwood, far away from here."  Again, a light breeze comes up, ruffling Natsume's hair.  As it does so, Dezel allows himself a small, brief smile.  "Can you tell me where you're from?"

Dezel remains still, allowing Natsume to edge ever closer and touch his boots. While the seraph has been comparing the kid to a scared animal from the start, Dezel is starting to specifically think of him as a human version of a small, easily startled puppy that's suffered through some abuse. All this light tapping and poking about Dezel's boots that's currently going on is rather similar to that of a curious puppy nose, prodding and sniffing about. It's just that everything is touch related instead of having anything to do with scent.

"I'm not mean, no." He then makes a low sound at the back of his throat, which sounds mildly annoyed, though the slight curve of his lips indicates a slight degree of amusement. "But some would tell you I can be grumpy."

Dezel tilts his head a little at the mention of Natsume's father dying. "So you're without close family?"

In a way, he already knows the answer to that question. Just from accidentally receiving a few of Natsume's memories previously, he's aware of the rejection the youth has suffered through over the years. It's something an angel of death like Dezel can relate to, even though he may have some difficulty openly relating through words.

"No, they don't."  Well, they don't hurt Dezel, anyway.  If he bites anyone with intent to break skin, it will hurt whoever he's attacking like hell.

He frowns at the mention of no one wanting to take Natsume in and keep him.  "They're foolish, then.  Family is important."

Somehow, that's easier to admit to a child.  Likely it's something Natsume should hear, anyway.

It's about then that Dezel recalls his knapsack and its contents.  He shifts a little, intending to reach over and pull it closer when he realizes he should probably inform the kid of his intentions first.

"You hungry, kid?  Eaten anything recently?"

A curious fixation, indeed.  Lords, kid.  Not that Dezel can blame Natsume, as the seraph was once a curious youth, himself.

"Still their loss," he responds in a disapproving tone as he snags the knapsack and pulls it closer.  "And yes, this is for you."

He opens the flap on the bag, the scent of food immediately wafting out from within.  A piece of cloth gets laid down on the floor first, then bags of fresh cherries and candied nuts.  A sweet smelling loaf of pound cake follows those.

Dezel finishes unwrapping the pound cake, then sets a metal canteen of water down beside the full spread of snacks.  He has to admit, Natsume's reaction to all this is kind of endearing.

"Eat your fill, but don't make yourself sick.  Whatever you don't finish can be saved for later."

That said, he folds his arms across his chest and sits back, giving the kid room to get in closer and eat.

After nodding once at the thanks, Dezel settles back with his eyes closed to wait while Natsume digs in, not wanting to interrupt the kid while he's eating. For one, it's a bit of relative peace and quiet that doesn't involve needing to make conversation. For another, Natsume is small, skinny kid who looks like he could use all the food he can get his hands on. Distracting him while he eats would be counterproductive. (Though granted the temptation is there to tell him to at least slow down so he doesn't choke. Dezel is a bit of a stickler for proper table manners, but he'll let this one incident slide.)

However, the air currents inform the seraph that something unusual is going on right before Natsume places the food bearing wrapper on his leg. Reaching up with one hand, Dezel uses his index finger to push up the brim of his hat a bit, one eye opening to glance down at what's just been presented to him.

"'My share'?" The words are echoed with a hint of confusion. Is Natsume just trying to be nice in return or is he attempting to make an offering of the food, somehow? "Me getting food isn't something you need to concern yourself with, Takashi. I can enjoy a good meal, but I don't need to eat to survive."

Dezel's eyebrows arch at that firm tone, the seraph making a low "tch" sound in immediate response. At first he can only shake his head, half wanting to argue with the kid, but honestly seeing no real point in it.

"Huh, stubborn kid. Fine, then." Picking up a couple of the candied nuts, Dezel pops one into his mouth, chewing and swallowing it before saying anything further. "Some literal food for thought couldn't hurt while I figure out what to do with you, anyway..."

Because he can't damn well leave Natsume there. The kid at his normal age and size lives alone, save for Kyan-san. Sure, he's also got neighbors, but Dezel doesn't know them and therefore has no reason to place trust in them. What to do, what to do, indeed...

"You're not in trouble. Just alone. If I leave, the only other one here is the dog." Of course, by saying that Dezel is also implying that it's possible that no one else may come around, either.

Another nut and a few cherries disappear as Dezel eats them, his sharp teeth making short work of the food. In the meantime, he's watching Natsume carefully, though still not reaching out to him physically. It's clear, however, that the child is already starting to look to him for some degree of support. Dezel might not be the best at providing reassurance, but he's well aware of when people are seeking it.

"Though the question is, do you trust me enough to let me take you elsewhere?"

"You definitely won't be alone if I take you back with me. You'll need to get used to living with four seraphim and another human."

Though lords, that messy face. Dezel frowns and finally succumbs to the urge to do something about Natsume's less than desirable manners regarding food. Pulling another bit of cloth from the knapsack, Dezel hooks his other arm around the kid's middle and pulls him into his lap.

"Urgh, c'mere, kid. You're a mess." And hence begins the wind seraph's efforts to do something about cleaning Natsume up a bit, though those stains might hang around a while whether anyone wants them to or not.

Edna would never let Dezel live this down if she ever found out about it. Hopefully, she won't.

"Seraphim.  More than one seraph," Dezel corrects, admittedly sounding somewhat irritable as he tries to get Natsume cleaned up.  "The other three are of the other three major elements.  Fire, water and earth."

Dezel grunts as Natsume paws at his hair, resisting the urge to jerk his head back.  "Because I'm a wind seraph.  And my hair is silver white under my hat and only green at the tips."

As Natsume settles, Dezel shifts somewhat, pulling his legs in so that he's sitting more cross-legged with the child situated in his lap. Having someone so close to him like this isn't something he's used to and not something he would typically want, but... Natsume is so young, he can deal with it. Even for as irritable as Dezel can get over never ending questions and too much contact, it's difficult to stay annoyed at a kid. Especially when he's actually trying to follow Dezel's example in using certain terms and just, well...smiling like that.

"It's new," Dezel says of his hat, reaching up to take it off once he's done getting the last of the cake crumbs and cherry juice off Natsume. "I lost the old one a little while ago." A pause. "This one isn't as good, but it looks alright."

There's a brief moment of hesitation. Then Dezel gently sets the hat on Natsume's head, silently resigned to the idea that this damn kid has somehow won his loyalty.

"I'm not sure. It fell off during a battle and I never got it back." There's a sad note to his tone, Dezel still regretting the loss and feeling pangs of guilt over what he'd needed to do that day. Then again, some part of him isn't sure that he even deserves to have that old hat anymore, anyway.

The moment of negative emotions is a fleeting one, however, the seraph managing to find a little comfort in Natsume's reaction to having the new hat set on his head. Alright, he has to admit it, the kid really is cute when he's like this. Especially with that smile on his face. Dezel's not used to seeing someone look at him that way, though. Not with so much adoration. His opinion still holds that he's a crummy seraph and hardly deserving of much, let alone the admiration of an innocent child.

Dezel allows himself a small, bare hint of a chuckle, reaching up with one hand to gently tug at the brim as though to teasingly pull it lower and hide Natsume's face. "It's not big. It's just that you're small."

Well, Dezel supposes Natsume has a point, there. Even though both of them are missing items they consider important, neither is forgotten. Amazing how children are able to simplify situations that way sometimes, taking away what's really important and holding onto that without even realizing the depth of what they've managed.

He will have to ask the kid about his apparent interest in bugs, though. At some point soon.

"Hn, then if we ever get you your own hat, we'll have to find one that fits. Can't have you wearing mine all the time if you can't see."

Dezel pulls the brim up again before letting go to allow Natsume full control over the hat and how it sits on his head.

"Maybe. We'll see. Perhaps after I get you to the house and we make sure you have other, more important things first. Like a bed to sleep in," Dezel responds, one arm finally coming around Natsume in a way he's really only semi-conscious of at the moment. "Practical things come first."

Of course, this may imply that Natsume will be getting a room of his own and other things to go with it. Granted, all this will need to be cleared with the rest of the household, but Dezel very much doubts any of them will say "no", especially not the likes of Sorey and Lailah. Hell, hanging around the Shepherd will probably do Natsume a lot of good. Both of them have an ability not many other humans possess and while the kid seems to be struggling with what that brings him, Sorey is more grounded in it and therefore may be a good influence.

"Yeah. We wouldn't make you sleep on the floor." Because seriously who would make a six year old do that night after night? ...then again, that's probably best left unanswered.

But anyway. The house is big and has spare rooms and bed in it. Setting Natsume up in one of them shouldn't be difficult.

"Clothes are also practical. Books less so, but they can be checked out from the library instead of bought."

Though that's not to say the household probably wouldn't get the kid something. They may not be rolling in money, but there is extra around to be had for various things.

Meanwhile, as their conversation goes on, Dezel resigns himself to allowing Natsume to run his fingers over the designs and seams on his jacket sleeve, even turning his hand over to the kid can get a better look at the back of his glove.

"Someone will go with you to the library, then, so you can borrow the books properly." And, you know, actually get to take them back to the house where they can be read at the kid's leisure.

At the question, Dezel hesitates in answering. He's not entirely sure what to say given the circumstances or what promises he can make. Maybe another approach would be better, as opposed to a clear answer. For right now, anyway.

"How long would you like us to keep you?"

Somehow who knows how, huh? Dezel is unable to suppress a small smile at that. Eh, Natsume really has wormed his way into the seraph's heart whether he likes it or not.

"A month isn't a very long time." It's a gentle correction, even it is based on what's relative. "So how about we keep you longer than a month? Until you're old enough to be on your own."

Which, quite honestly, could be tomorrow for all Dezel knows, since he's not sure how Natsume got to be like this, and when or even if he'll change back. Even if it's not that soon, though, the household as a whole should have what it takes to raise a kid.

Sigh, yep. Making sure table manners are taught will definitely be a thing, but on the whole, it's not that big a deal. No point in brushing off the crumbs right now, either. Who knows how much more Dezel will end up all over him before he finally eases Natsume out of his lap to stand up.

"We can, unless you don't want that." It's at that point, the arm that's been around Natsume lifts, Dezel's hand coming to rest carefully on his shoulder. "When I was about your age, another wind seraph did the same for me; he took me and kept me, and I stayed with him even after I'd grown up."

In Dezel's mind, he'll never be as good of a seraph or a guardian as Lafarga, but perhaps his old friend and mentor would approve of this. Dezel is trying, anyway, and he does care what happens to Natsume.

Something that, at the time, had meant everything to Dezel. By that point, others had already rejected him or moved on without him. Young and hard pressed to defend himself, he'd been feeling lonely and afraid, even if he'd put on a brave face in front of Lafarga and pretended like he wasn't back then.

"He was like a concerned older brother to me and my best friend. The hat I used to have once belonged to him."

Dezel can't quite keep a tinge of sadness out of his tone. Sure, he still dresses just like Lafarga otherwise, but...that top hat. It had been the elder wind seraph's favorite item of clothing and when Dezel was younger, there had been moments when Lafarga had let him wear it a while. Just like Dezel is letting Natsume wear his new hat, now.

Out in the hallway, spread out on the stairs and the landing, sits a pile of machine parts and tools made for working with them. At the sound of someone entering the hall in a hurry, he looks up, ready to warn off whoever it is from stepping on them.

All he sees at first is the dog, who he greets with a mischievous smile and an outstretched hand.

"Kyan-san, what do you think you're doing? What are you going to do when--."

'When Takashi sees you?' was going to be the end of that sentence, but it's abruptly cut short when Anakin catches sight of what Kyan-san was chasing.

That... That is a small child. An oddly familiar and extremely worrying small child. The Force signature just hammers the point home and makes denial impossible, but that doesn't stop Anakin from asking, anyway.

That is at least part of the reason that Anakin blurts out, too loudly and with no filter, "No, no, of course not!"

Which is not going to help Takashi calm down and stop cringing away from him, he realizes right away. The younger children are, the worse he seems to get about handling them. Deep breaths, Anakin. You can do this.

"I mean... No, you aren't in any trouble. I was just... I was startled when I saw you, that's all."

"It isn't you. And I'm rebuilding a part of an airship engine."

Only a few of the tools will likely seem familiar to Takashi. A lot of them are handmade things that Anakin build himself out of frustration with the more primitive tech he had available.

"She would give me a disappointed look, though. Like this," he tries to mimic the expression that almost every child instinctually knows, the "I am so disappointed in you that I can't even be angry, so I'm just going to sigh and make you feel even worse than if I yelled" look.

Alright. For a moment, Anakin thinks that maybe dealing with children isn't so difficult, after all. Treating him like anyone else, just smaller, seems to be working out okay.

And then, Takashi gets him right in the most sensitive parts of his heart.

Someone was hitting Takashi. That made a disgusting amount of sense. No wonder the boy was always so afraid to be touched, even when he's older. It isn't surprising that he'd assume the worst of Anakin's anger

"No hitting. Not ever. She would never hurt anyone, especially not people she loves," his tone is fierce, suddenly, which likely doesn't help Takashi feel any safer. Calm down, he needs calm; he won't help by being upset, even if his heart is breaking at the idea. He takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly as he reigns his temper back in.

He puts the airship parts down, slowly raising a hand where it can be seen, making sure it doesn't cause more flinching, before he sets it to rest on Takashi's head. He'd like to bundle up the child in his arms, carry him inside, and make sure no one ever touched him again, but that's impossible. All he can do is push soothing, calm thoughts into the Force, hoping that Takashi's sensitivity will allow the feeling to get across.

The atmosphere he'd been going for was calm and meditative, before a little boy and his little dog can rushing through. With Takashi practically radiating peace right now, the combination makes it easy enough to find that feeling again.

Slowly, he runs his hand over the top of Takashi's head, trying to offer comfort where he knows there has been a lack.

"I live in the apartment underneath yours. You can come stay with us whenever you want."

"If you ever get hurt again" goes unsaid, but he thinks Takashi will get it. He's been there, though the circumstances were slightly different. The only reason Kylo Ren is in the building is because he'd come to Obi-Wan for something. He's stomping his way through the hallway quickly, intending to avoid his grandparents if at all possible, when he comes across the small boy stumbling out of the door.

Ren's first instinct is to narrow his eyes in disgust—he very rarely tolerates children, not to mention the dog's annoying yapping—but when he gets a sense of the child, the distaste turns into slight confusion and a stronger interest. Stepping forward, the knight looms over Natsume without any attempts to reduce his immense height to something less intimidating.

"You..."

Something strange has happened here. That's nothing new, on this planet, but he hasn't heard of something like this, specifically. His dark eyes are cold and sharp as he focuses them on the young child, and even if he may not intend any harm at the moment, it's clear enough he doesn't care about Natsume's safety or comfort in the slightest.

Oh, it is fun, in a way—it's easy, at the very least, because all Ren has to do is extend a gloved hand to freeze the dog in place mid-yap. He's not hurting it, merely keeping it in place. It gets the thing out of the way for the time being so he can turn his attention back to the boy, who's vastly more interesting at the moment.

"Judgmental little thing, isn't it," he says, peering down at Natsume over his shoulder. Ren might have thought it would recognize the boy's scent or something of that nature, but perhaps it's just an ill-behaved beast in general.

Ren steps forward to pick the still-frozen dog up, and with another step he deposits it on the floor inside the apartment. It's only after the knight closes the door behind him that he frees Kyan-san to do as he pleases again, now out of sight and unable to do any more biting of ankles.

"Of course," Ren says to the request, starting to shed his coat. "Staying here won't find you something proper to wear, for one."

The man finally kneels down, placing his coat—already oversized for a sixteen-year-old Natsume—around the child's shoulders. It wouldn't do to have the child walking around half-naked, even if the shirt is enough to cover most of him.

It's a curious question—one that makes Ren's eyes glint with a dark amusement as the shadows darken around him. It's doubtful that effect will make Natsume feel much easier about the situation.

"I have no intention of harming you," he says evenly, keeping on eye-level with the child.

"But there are some who might call me a monster. Isn't it the same for you? People view you as... scary or wrong, just because you're different."

If there's no more hesitation about being picked up from Natsume, Ren has no more reason to hesitate either; he scoops the boy up, allowing him to sit up to some extent on Ren's arms.

"I am," he replies, starting to move forward, splitting his attention between Natsume and the path ahead. "I can see and do things that other people can't. That makes them afraid... so they tried to hurt me."

He says all this very matter-of-fact, and then turns his eyes to meet the child's to ask a question he already knows the answer to.

"People have tried to hurt you as well, haven't they?"

Kylo Ren is basically a space wizard, so yes.

Though his brow twitches when the boy buries his face against Ren, he makes no movements to dislodge him, continuing to walk forward.

"Bad how?" he asks, sounding doubtful. Ren can't see this child doing much that's truly harmful. It was more likely his caretakers reacting badly because they couldn't understand what he was experiencing.

The man holds back a sigh. There's no crying, at least, so it's acceptable. Before long, they're out in the sun, and Ren is heading towards the marketplace.

"Lies?" Ren repeats, latching onto that obviously untrue response. "I doubt that you tell lies. I think it's simply that no one else believes you."

He, at least, hadn't had that problem, for the most part. Everyone in his family knew of the Force and the sorts of things it could bring. Stories of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker were well known by those who he interacted with most of the time, when he was particularly young. It didn't keep them from mistreating him, of course... and there were always those who didn't believe in the power of the Force elsewhere.

"I don't think you would hurt yourself or anyone else, either."

His hair is perfect, thank you for noticing. Ren turns his own intense gaze towards the child, looking very serious.

"I do. It's as I said: I'm different, like you are."

There aren't quite so many phantoms and hidden monsters in Ren's galaxy, as far as Force-sensitives go, but there were a few in Ren's experience.

"You have a special power that other people don't understand," he continues somewhat quietly, like they're sharing a secret. "That's why they call you bad. Why they try to hurt you. They're just jealous."

Ren has to let out a quiet chuckle at that. "I am, it's true. But it took a long time before I decided to do it."

He spent far too long bending to others' expectations, in his opinion. He was glad to finally be free of those, to pick his own path—to realize his true power, instead of restraining it. Perhaps he can plan the idea in this child's mind, as well...

"My name is Kylo Ren. Yours is Natsume Takashi, isn't it?"

Even if the knight had never said it before, he was well aware of it. One doesn't typically dig into someone's memories and come out of it not knowing such simple facts.

"Takashi," he repeats, though it's unlikely he'll address the boy by name much. There are few people he addresses by name, although he never forgets one. Ren lets out a thoughtful hum before he answers Natsume's question.

"The reason is that I was told that I deserved it, and I believed that for a long time. I thought something was wrong with me."

But he'd made it through, eventually. He'd come to accept the dark urges that came from the back of his mind as something that set him apart, something that made him better. When the truth came out about his lineage, everything clicked into place.

Ren lifts Takashi slightly so that he's about on eye-level with him; given his height, it's a fairly good vantage point to look at the various old stores lining the streets and the few people milling about. There are a couple of those people who shoot the duo uneasy glances, but Ren ignores them. His scarred face is easily recognized these days, and he's gotten used to those looks.

"We're going to a shop to find you some clothes, first."

"I can see that," Ren replies, raising his eyebrows. He turns his attention forward again, eyes searching the signs for the proper shop to visit.

"That's right. There weren't so many things I could see as you, perhaps, but I heard so many things... it was never quiet in my head."

It wasn't something he admitted much these days, and when he was younger, it quickly became something not worth talking about—there was nothing to be done except train and keep quiet about it. It wasn't something anyone could help him with, not really.

"People didn't like the things I did to try to make it easier, or when I talked about it."

Ren's focus is mostly forward now, though he does take note of the sound of Natsume's stomach. It's easy enough to find food in the market, so that will be the next stop, after finding clothes. He's mostly spending Hux's money, anyway.

"Only some of it," he replies. "But I learned to understand it, and make it quieter."

Mostly, he learned to use what he could hear of others' thoughts, and learned to embrace the darker things that came from his own mind. It still wasn't easy, but it was more manageable. This child really does seem to be aware of more than most of his years, but Ren supposes that's not surprising, what with his abilities and the way he's been treated.

"That's true, especially when it comes from a child. They think themselves smarter no matter what, and they don't like being wrong." That includes himself, of course, but he's also more likely to believe the sorts of things Natsume might say about the monsters he could see.

Ren finally spots and begins to head towards a store that looks like it may be what they're searching for, which is convenient; he hasn't exactly been in need of children's clothing, so he had no real idea of where to look before now. Hopefully the boy won't be too picky as far as things to wear.

lostapprentice: that's how it's gonna be. (b: ah. okay.)

There's a particular sort of hesitation before Ren's answer to that question, and something almost like a flinch barely perceptible in his expression. The issue of his family is always a sensitive one, even though he's spoken with them relatively often here. None of them know what they've done in the future. It's not the same as speaking to the family that knows him like he knows them.

"They did," Ren replies somberly.

The man doesn't mind the sudden shyness from Natsume; he only needs yeses or nos anyway, as far as buying clothes. He'll be quick to select a few items that vaguely resemble what the child's older self wears before addressing him.

"Can you dress yourself?"

There is some sympathy in the man towards Natsume as well, but instead of acting on it or saying anything, he simply lets the subject pass. It's something that's hurt both of them, he's certain, and dwelling on it at this moment isn't going to do much for them.

The form of the answer is an acceptable one, but he's quickly distracted by the much more interesting thing here, which is that Natsume is gravitating more towards Ren's personal taste. Something like a smirk comes to his face as he sets the other clothes onto a rack, and he replaces those with things more similar to what he's wearing, but suitable enough for the hot weather. Most sane people don't tend to wear coats in the summer heat, and he's not going to insist Natsume follow his lead in that aspect, at least.

"If you insist."

It's only a few more short moments before Ren steps towards the curtain that serves as a dressing room and sets the child down on his feet. After that, he holds out the clothes, underwear included, for Natsume to take, and he feels it's clear enough what to do next that he doesn't need to say anything.

Ren tilts his head as he regards the boy and his question, and there's no real pause or hesitation in his answer.

"Of course," the man replies, brushing a bang out of Natume's face with a gloved hand in a manner that's neither rough nor gentle. He can understand the fear of abandonment, but his posture isn't that of a man who's interested in running—he tends to stand very solidly, like a brick wall that's not going anywhere.

"We still have to get lunch, don't we?"

He speaks confidently; staying with the boy for some time was something he accepted shortly after seeing him in that hallway, and he doesn't intend to go back on that plan. That Ren wouldn't leave him behind is a given.

It's certainly enough of an effort to satisfy Kylo; he doesn't have to do anything particularly humiliating to help the child, and even he has trouble with his own shirts sometimes (who knew that substituting the Force for the lost fine motor skills in your previously dominant hand would be so difficult?), so he doesn't have any problem with kneeling down to Natsume and helping him as requested. Since the child seems interested in imitating him, he buttons the collar as high as it will go and tucks the ends of the shirt in as well.

"There," he remarks when he's satisfied with the result, smoothing the boy's shoulders briefly before retrieving his coat and rising to his feet. "Now. What do you want to eat?"

It would be faster to get to what he was actually interested in if they simply picked up a few groceries and returned to his home to make something, so that's what he's going to do. But mostly, the more privacy they get for the conversation Ren intends to pursue, the better. He doesn't want someone sabotaging it and muddling the child's mind with any unnecessary information about his previous actions.

Having recently finished another hard day's work, Han has decided he'll swing by Natsume's place and make sure he's all right. Why? Because Natsume is a noodle who does stupid things like climb on rooftops and lose the ladder, and also happens to live next door to the artist eventually to be known as Darth Vader, and that's reason enough to visit, right? Natsume is his on some level, right? Right.

So anyway, as usual, he's dirty, sweaty, and has a knapsack slung over one shoulder. He really isn't expecting anything out of the ordinary, which is why a little kid bolting out of the apartment wearing comically large clothes leaves him looking and feeling somewhat nonplussed. Does Natsume have a kid brother or something?...

"Take it easy, kid, where's the fire?"

This is delivered in his usual manner, a gruff drawl. Because that's reassuring.

Han watches this play out with sheer honest-to-goodness bewilderment. That's got to be the biggest over-reaction he's ever seen and things get even worse when the kid starts crying. He is not good at dealing with tears, what is he supposed to do?...

He glances back toward Natsume's apartment, from which no one is emerging to deal with the kid's wailing. Natsume is definitely the responsible type, so he wouldn't just leave a kid home alone...and that one guy did mention to Han that people can disappear from the island and come back from a different point in time...

"Aw, hell."

Well, if that's the case he has to do something. Getting him back into the house seems like a good plan, since people Han wouldn't want running out to investigate a crying kid live around here. He approaches the kidlier version of his kid and holds his hands out in the universal come here so I can pick you up gesture. Shut up, he does know that much about small children. And anyway seems like he remembers Natsume and Ren both responding well to physical comfort in the past.

"All right, all right, calm down. C'mere."

He still looks faintly perturbed, but his expression is definitely gentler than it was before. What a day.

Han makes an extremely undignified umph sound as Natsume barrels into him, but obligingly shuffles his arms around so that he's holding him securely. As for the unfortunate signs he's seeing at the moment...well, they were sort of there before, too, just not this vivid, and while Han hates to know his darker guesses were true he's seen it before, and worse, so rather than wasting time trying to deal with all that he takes his latent irritation out on the dog.

"Shut up! Shush! Damn mangy furball..."

He nudges at the dog with his foot as he heads inside, Natsume settled (hopefully) comfortably against his side. He's not sure what he's looking for here, maybe something smaller to dress the kid in. Once he's inside the door properly he glances around and, seeing no one has come out to see what's going on, tentatively calls Natsume's name. You know, just in case he really is actually here and the kid in his arms isn't actually him.

"Takashi?..."

Well, that didn't have the outcome he was hoping for. This is bullshit, but he's still gotta deal with it. At least Natsume hasn't killed anybody, so this situation is automatically better than anything he's had to deal with from Ren.

So after indulging briefly in a haunted expression--because he has no clue how this is going to work moving forward even if he has read an embarrassing number of parenting books at this point--he lets it go with a sigh and very gently smooths Natsume's hair and shirt down. Pointless fussing is his specialty when under stress.

"How long you been here, kiddo?" He's wandering through the house now, poking around in the dim hope that he'll find some appropriately-sized clothes.

After ruffling half-heartedly through Natsume's belongings, Han gives it up and heads for the door. He can't let Natsume stay here by himself at this age, so he'll just take him to his own house. Seems like a totally natural plan.

"No such thing as monsters, all right? I'm a person and that...is just a dog-shaped pile of fur, it probably don't even have teeth."

He sets about closing up Natsume's apartment as he grumbles, making sure the lights are off and closing the door. He doesn't have a key, but it's not like the kid seems to own anything of value anyway. Plus Darth Vader lives downstairs so that's probably a crime deterrent.

"Listen, Takashi. We're, uh, we're gonna get you something to wear and go home, all right?"

He pats Natsume down, apparently looking for blood. He's got bandages at his place, so if the dog actually bit him he can deal with that. It's fine. He tries to address Natsume's other concerns as casually as possible, in order to maintain the illusion that he knows what the hell he's doing.

"Uh, yeah. You do." Yep, extremely smooth as usual. "An' I know, that's why we're stopping to get something better on the way."

At least he just sounds low-key grumpy and not outright hostile. Natsume might not take that very well at this age.

Han squints at the presented foot, wondering if he's missing something or if it's just normal for kids to take small things that seriously. Natsume seems to be a little melodramatic, so that might be it. Of course, all thought of that flies right out of his mind at Natsume's question.

"Am I--what--no!"

This is a sputtered denial of both anger and grumpiness, even though it's quite clear that he's a little grumpy by nature. Although despite his slightly harsh response he keeps holding Natsume quite securely. He is both tall and strong, apparently.

"You don't worry about me, all right? I worry about you, that's how it works."

It's probably a good thing that there aren't that many people around, because those are the kinds of questions that could potentially get Han re-arrested. But the few souls walking near them on the street aren't paying that close attention for convenience's sake, so Han does his best to answer. Maybe he should have introduced himself from the start, huh?

"Name's Han." For some reason, he can't bring himself to demand this tiny version of Natsume refer to him as Captain. Go figure. "We're goin' in here and then to my house. I got plenty of food there so relax."

He says this as they come upon one of several clothing shops in the town that carry kids' clothing. Hopefully Han can just grab a few things that fit and get out, there's no telling how annoying Natsume might get at this age if he stays hungry too long.

"A vest, right."

That's so helpful, Natsume. You can even hear how impressed Han is by that response just by the dryness of his tone. He drifts from rack to rack, holding things up to Natsume and keeping hold of the ones that seem to be okay. He has no intention of trying to deal with a fitting room at this point, so in the end a couple of shirts and pairs of shorts are what he drops on the counter. Oh, and a stupid tiny vest and a stupid tiny pair of slip-on sandals, because why not. The weather's warm enough for it.

The store clerk gives them a suspicious look, probably because of how grimy Han looks and how ill-fitting Natsume's clothes are, but Han's annoyed glare is enough to keep him from asking uncomfortable questions and soon enough Han has another bag to juggle. They can't get back to his place soon enough.

Natsume should be pleased by the selection then, since the shirts are also basically identical to what Han wears. It's the current popular style.

Meanwhile, Han is starting to realize that the various books he's read were not kidding about small children being inquisitive about the world around them. Seems like all Natsume does is ask questions. But he's also read that it's healthy to encourage natural curiosity, so. He's doing his best here, even though dealing with an actual small child feels like he's sitting in a final exam or something. No pressure, right?

"Well, I ain't gettin' into them any time soon." But wait, maybe he shouldn't be using sarcasm here. Is Natsume old enough to even understand it? "I mean, uh, yeah. All yours."

Merisia was only passing through when she'd decided to pay Natsume a visit. She hadn't seen him in a while, and knowing all the trouble he would get himself into, it only made sense to check in on him. That's what her reasoning was, anyway. She's still too stubborn to admit how much she really cares about Natsume. The cynical part of her is already expecting to walk in on some kind of disaster, but the more logical part of her reasons that there's only so much that could happen in his own home

It's when she hears a dog barking that her sense of dread takes over. Merisia hurries for the sources of the sound, Carbuncle running just ahead of her and yapping frantically. The moment Natsume comes into view, they both slow to a halt.

Who's this little kid? The resemblance is absolutely uncanny, but she doesn't remember Natsume mentioning any younger brother living with him, let alone any younger brother at all...

Well, this is a fine pickle. Merisia has never been all that great with kids - she only barely manages with teenagers, really, and that's only because part of her never quite grew out of that phase - and this really isn't helping. As comforting as she wants to be, even with no one else around to tease her for it, she doesn't know what first step there is to take, although a silent order to Carbuncle has him quieting down and approaching more slowly.

It's only because the boy is standing there, completely still, that a few puzzle pieces click together in Merisia's mind, and she realizes that this face is familiar. But...No. It can't be. And yet, she has to be sure.

She takes a step forward, careful not to seem aggressive (not that being six feet tall and having red eyes really helps very much with that, but she does what she can), concern etched on her face.

No doubt about it, this is definitely him. Merisia isn't sure just how he ended up this way, but she can figure that out later. Right now he looks absolutely stressed, and she can't have that.

Gods help her, though, Natsume is adorable as a little kid. The teary eyes make her feel a little guilty, though; she's never been all that great with children. But...well, she knows Natsume. And she knows how much she cares about him, how he somehow wormed his way into her heart without her realizing until it was too late and she became attached. Perhaps... Perhaps she can use that as a starting point.

Carbuncle is busying himself with greeting Kyan-san with a quiet squeak and a bit of playful nudging, so Merisia's on her own. Carefully, and slowly so as not to startle the boy, she kneels down. "It's me; Merisia. Do you recognize me?"

"...I'm not sure." But she can make sense of this later... Right now, she's more concerned with Natsume's current state. She holds a hand out to him. "But I promise I won't hurt you. Neither will Carbuncle."

As though to demonstrate this, Carbuncle quietly approaches Natsume, as opposed to his earlier excitement, but he watches carefully for any signs that Natsume might be nervous, stopping in his tracks if he sees any. Whether he's doing this of his own volition or he's following Merisia's will is up for debate, but Merisia is right: the little familiar won't hurt him.

He's calmed down...good. That's a start. She can work with this, maybe.

"Carbuncle is just Carbuncle," she explains. "He's a lesser elemental that I summon to protect me. He won't hurt you if he knows you're a good person."

It's really the only way she knows to explain Carbuncle's ability to sense hostility and judge someone's personality to a little kid, but it'll have to do. Carbuncle cautiously sniffs at Natusme's hand before nudging it, letting out a soft and content trill. Natsume may look strange and he may be acting strange, but he knows that scent anywhere. This is his friend!

Merisia stares curiously at Natsume. Him? Bad? He hardly seemed like a bad person to her when she knew him. Granted, she'd been wary of him at first, but she was like that with everyone. He'd proven to her in time that he meant no harm; at worst he was just an occasionally dry-witted boy who had less of a sense of self-preservation than he probably should. Though even that seemed to come with an upside: Merisia had gotten a little better at using her healing-oriented spells thanks to his repeated mishaps.

"Tch, being bad sometimes doesn't make you a bad person. We all make mistakes." I sure have. "Besides, Carbuncle doesn't seem to agree with you, anyway."

Sure enough, the little familiar sits quietly right near Natsume, gazing up at him with wide, curious eyes. You can pet him, Natsume! He won't bite or anything, he promises!
